Pick ‘N Save

In 1883, Barney Kroger invested his life savings of $372 to establish a standalone grocery store at 66 Pearl Street in Cincinnati, Ohio. His guiding principle was simple yet profound: “Be particular. Never sell anything you would not want yourself.” Over the years, the Kroger Company has remained committed to serving its customers and communities with the utmost care, continuously innovating, and maintaining high standards in its employment practices.

Today, Kroger stands as the largest grocer in the United States, boasting nearly 2,800 stores spread across 35 states, operating under 28 different names. The company’s current business practices are deeply rooted in Barney Kroger’s original vision to provide customers with fresh food, affordable prices, and innovative solutions—values that continue to shape the core mission of Kroger to this day.

Piggly Wiggly

Established in 1911, the Schultz Brothers Company evolved into “Schultz Brothers Company Wholesale Grocers” by 1920. In 1949, the company entered into a franchise agreement, allowing them to operate as Piggly Wiggly in southern and eastern Wisconsin, alongside original franchisers in Sturgeon Bay, Manitowoc, Green Bay, and Kaukauna.

In 1962, the company acquired the Sav-O Corporation, a participant in the trading stamp business, leading to the formation of “Schultz Sav-O Stores, Inc.” This merger paved the way for the development of a sophisticated electronic marketing and customer relationship program. The introduction of the Piggly Wiggly Preferred Club Card marketing program in 1995 and the Pig Points gas discount program in 2006 showcased the company’s innovative approach.

Though the origin of the name “Piggly Wiggly” remains shrouded in mystery, the company’s intricate marketing strategies and efficient business practices, known as “The Program,” have been instrumental in its success.
